8080 Class

The 80 Class DEMU entered service with NIR in 1974. They were based on the BREL Mark2B design. A second batch of 80 Class entered service in 1977/78. A average consist was formed of a power car (housing the power unit and guards compartment) an intermediate trailer and driving trailer (containing a small drivers cab).

The 80 class could be found on all routes on the NIR network including the cross border route to Dublin. The 80 Class have operated railtours and charter trains on the IE network. They even reached Navan on a railtour in the 90s.

In the late 1980s 3 three car sets (powercars 68,69,86) were leased to Iarnród Éireann for use on the Bray-Greystones shuttle the Connolly-Maynooth service and the Cork-Cobh route. The 3 sets returned to NIR in the early 1990s.They were renumbered the 8080 class by Translink in the late 1990s.

The sets were due to be completly replaced by the new 3000 class however a small batch of 8080 class vehicles are currently being refurbished and should see service for another 4 or 5 years. Power car 8099 (pictured above) has being preserved on the East Lancs Railway.

8450 Class

Built by BREL between 1985/87 the 450 class DEMU used the power units salvaged from the 8 withdrawn 70 class DEMU and 1 withdrawn 80 class unit. The bodies which look like the 150 class in the UK were built on refurbished mark1 carrage underframes. An average 450 class 3car set consists of a power car,an intermediate trailer and driving trailer. They were renumbered by Translink in the late 1990s.

Since the arrival of the 3000 class they operate on the Belfast-Larne line and on the Colraine-Portrush branch.

3000 Class

Built by CAF in 2004 the 3000 Class now operate the majority of NIR services. There are 23 three car sets. Max speed is 90MPH and are fully air conditioned. They can sometimes be found on the cross border route standing in for the Enterprise.
